CHI Geneva returns with another exciting programme and an extra day of action

This year’s CHI Geneva (CHIG) will be even more action-packed than usual. Running over five days instead of the customary four, it will open on a Wednesday (7 December), a day given over to national events. The competitions that have made the gathering such a success over the years will then take place, as per usual, over the next four days. All in all, it promises to be quite an occasion.

As an added incentive for the participants in the opening day’s domestic competitions, they will have the chance to qualify for a brand new CHIG event, the Credit Suisse Coupe du Jockey Club, which will take place early in the evening on Saturday 10 December. The teams taking part in this competition will each feature two Jockey Club winners, an international rider and an eventing rider. Held over one round, with a jump-off if necessary, the event will bring professional and amateur riders together with participants from the previous day’s indoor cross-country competition, infusing the CHIG with even more team spirit.

On Thursday 8 and Friday 9 December, the CHIG will open its doors late in the morning for the international competitions. A qualifying event for Sunday’s Rolex Grand Prix, Thursday evening’s Trophée de Genève will see the leading horse/rider teams go head to head in the world’s biggest indoor equestrian arena, each of them gunning for a place in the CHIG’s showpiece event. Presented by the newspaper Tribune de Genève and kicking off at 18:00, the indoor cross-country competition takes centre stage on day three of this year’s CHIG and is sure to attract an enthralled sell-out crowd. It will be followed by the IJRC Rolex Top 10 Final, with the ten finest show jumpers in the world facing off in an all-action two-round event of the highest order.

The next generation

Under-25 riders will have no fewer than three events to look forward to, including the Grand Prix Land Rover on Saturday morning. The organisers of the CHIG have always been keen supporters of the sport’s next generation, and the winners of these Under-25 events could well find themselves at the pinnacle of world jumping one day.

Saturday’s programme features some classic CHIG staples, including the Coupe de Genève, a combinations event that is unique in the world; La Grande Chasse, a highlight of which is seeing the horses gallop through the water feature, and, in the evening, the Credit Suisse Challenge, a world ranking event.

Spotlight falls on driving and the Rolex Grand Prix

Carriage driving makes its entrance on Saturday afternoon with an open competition presented by the Institut International de Lancy. The event will determine the start order for the six drivers who will compete in Sunday morning’s Geneva leg of the FEI Driving World Cup™, presented by Radio Télévision Suisse. Rounding off the day is the Rolex Grand Prix, one of the four majors of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. Can Germany’s Daniel Deusser make it out three wins out of four following his victories in ’s-Hertogenbosch and Calgary? Or will compatriot Gerrit Nieberg, who won in Aachen and placed well at the Spruce Meadows Masters in Canada, add another Grand Slam title to his list of honours. The answer to those questions will come on 11 December.

Away from the competitions, spectators can live and breathe the equestrian world by enjoying horse displays, presentations on Swiss breeding, educational workshops on Schools Day (Thursday), the tented village, and a host of restaurants and food stands. See you at Palexpo on 7-11 December.
