The updated FEI Veterinary Regulations contain an important change to regulations regarding the removal or shortening of hairs in the auricles of the horse. From January 2025, it has become a ‘prohibited method’ under the article regulating sensory hairs.
The amended wording of Article 1004 (i) now states that ‘if the hair in the auricles of the Horse have been removed or shortened within the rims of the auricle’, the horse will no longer be permitted to compete in FEI events. Studies show that auricle hairs can prevent insects and small objects from entering the ear and protect against extreme acoustic stimuli.
The amendment became effective on 1 January 2025.
