How did you feel on the eve of previous editions in which you participated (London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016) and how do you feel today?
I feel a little less stressed since I’m named as the alternate.
What is your fondest memory of those moments?
My best memory so far from an Olympic Games is my clear round in the team final in Rio with Tripple X. It was a feeling of euphoria and I will never forget it!
How did you choose your partner and what kind of training did you do with him in the run-up to the Olympic Games?
My partner Figor (2010 KWPN) was an easy choice. He has limitless scope and a lot of experience. I think experience goes a long way at any championship so I’m very grateful for our seven years together and to ride a horse like this. We did our preparation at the Spruce Meadows Summer Series. Most Canadians use this impressive facility because it’s good for fitness and a good place to jump some big jumps!
Who are the people you feel you have to thank for your presence in Paris and why?
The people I have to thank the most are my owners Andy and Carlene Ziegler. They have been my supporters for 15 years and they are the reason I am where I am in my career today. I also have to thank the team around Figor: his groom Caroline Holmberg, his former home rider Max Manzardo, his vet Eduardo Felix, his farrier Pierre Renault and our organizer Shirra Uys.
How did you experience the first months of 2024 with the goal to be selected for the Olympics? You were looking forward to it with concern or you were pretty sure you could do it?
I felt pretty good. I have a great team of horses that have kept me in the sport so Figor didn’t have to work too hard.
What do you expect from the courses in Paris. Are you familiar with the work of the two chefs de piste?
I think we will see very technical and sophisticated courses in Versailles. I think these are the two best course designers in the world right now so I think they will produce great sport.
What do you think of the Olympic Games formula?
I prefer a championship with cumulative scoring, four riders and a drop score.
