ROLEX IJRC TOP 10 FINAL: RIDER NO. 4 Harrie Smolders

 

1) How did you plan this year’s season and which horses did you ride to qualify for the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final?

I’m very lucky that I have a strong string of horses at the moment, thanks to Evergate Stables and Copernicus, and we have been building momentum throughout the season. I have some up-and-coming talent, such as the young stallions Escape Z and Uricas, and some experienced horses such as Monaco, Darry Lou and Bingo, all of whom suit different arenas and locations.

2) Which horse will you be riding in the Final? Tell us about him/her. What sort of bond have you established?

So far the plan is to ride Monaco. He really needs no introduction as he is such a strong and capable horse and we’ve had many good results together. However, to win the Top 10 would be a good one to add! I feel our bond has really developed over this season especially - he is so smart and quick-thinking. I think he is very special.

3) Four years have gone by since you last took part in the Top 10. In the course of these years you have been very successful! How do you feel about returning to the Top Ten?

Very good, and I think it’s a testament to the team and people around me, we are all pulling in the same direction and without them it wouldn’t be possible to have these results.
