n a thrilling finale to Jumping at the Pan American Games 2023 in Quillota, Chile today, Brazil’s Stephan de Freitas Barcha kept his nerve to claim individual gold with the 12-year-old mare Chevaux Primavera Imperio Egipcio.

In the overnight lead, and on a day when clear rounds were at a premium, the 34-year-old rider produced one of just three foot-perfect performances in the first round and despite four faults at the very last fence in round two he held on to take the title.

Silver went to USA’s Kent Farrington and Landon while his compatriot and gold-medal-winning team-mate McLain Ward took the bronze with Contagious.

There were three qualifying spots on offer to NOCs for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and they were earned by Argentina’s Jose Maria Larocca (Finn Lente) who finished eighth, Colombia’s Roberto Teran Tafur (Dez Oktoff) who finished seventh and Chile’s Agustin Covarrubias (Nelson du Petit Vivier) who finished in 13th place.
