After the recent EHV-1 outbreak that occurred last year and expanded throughout western continental Europe, it has been shared a publication of part 1 of the EFSA Assessment of listing and categorisation of animal diseases within the framework of the Animal Health Law (Regulation (EU) No 2016/429), to assess the eligibility of EHV-1 infection of being listed as a notifiable disease within the European Union.
This report, which is available online here, partly concluded that the EFSA Panel on animal health and welfare found with 33% to 90% certainty (ranging from ‘as likely as not’ to ‘likely’) that EHV-1 can be considered eligible to be listed for Union intervention, but estimated with 1–5% certainty (extremely unlikely) that EHV-1 meets the criteria for the application of the disease prevention and control rules referred to in point (b) of Article 9(1) of the Animal Health Law.
Following this publication, a committee was created reuniting the FEI and the IFHA , to regroup information from the different equine industry sectors (sport horse, racehorse, breeding) affected by EHV-1 infection.
All athletes and all person involved with horses, are invited to give their professional input, taking part in an important survey on the EHV outbreak which can be found by clicking on this link.
