Olympic show jumper Beezie Madden added a new mount to her string this week, the experienced grand prix horse Quister de Guldenboom.
Longtime sponsor Abigail Wexner bought the chestnut gelding, who was previously campaigned by Jane Richard Philips of Switzerland in CSI***** competitions, for Madden to ride. Jane’s husband Ignace Philips also showed him in a few two- and three-star classes this year. The gelding, an 11-year-old French-bred Selle Français (Kannan—Naiade Dunoise, Eyken des Fontenis), recently won the San Remo CSI** (Italy) in June with Ignace.
“We’ve always liked the horse,” said Madden. “Jane Richards came to us when we were at the [Longines Global Champions Tour] in London and asked if we would be interested. It’s kind of a coincidence, because we had kind of been interested in the horse and thinking about it but never approached him. We tried him, and we really liked him.”
Since he just arrived at John Madden Sales in Cazenovia, N.Y., Beezie doesn’t have any big plans for the gelding yet.
“We’re just going to start slow, see what happens,” she said.
